Why choose to spend a little bit more money to have a professional notary vs. going to a mailbox store or bank notary?
A Professional Mobile Notary (like Kris Hasenfratz) is available to assist the client after normal business hours and will meet them at a time and place most convenient to the client. A mailbox store notary is only available during business hours and often not in the store on a full-time basis. This means that you need to rearrange your schedule and wait, and then drive to the location when they are in the store.
Mailbox store notaries provide a needed service for documents that are straight forward and quick to sign. More complicated documents may present a challenge. Should the Notary be unfamiliar with the type of document, they may not have a contact to reach out to for assistance, or sign and notarize the document, not realizing that something might be missing or incorrect with the document. Most mailbox store Notaries will not notarize real estate documents as they are much more complicated. If something is missing from the document set or if it’s filled out incorrectly, it may delay or even cause the loss of the sale or purchase.
A Professional Notary is well educated to assure that they are providing the best, most professional service to their client. They must undergo a background check annually to retain the ability to work with closing companies and title companies. They usually carry a more inclusive Errors and Omission Insurance policy to protect the client if an unintentional error occurs; although this is a rare occurrence, this is crucial to protect the client.
In the State of Michigan, a Notary is not required by law to keep a Notarial Journal, but a Professional mobile Notary will use one to keep track of the service(s) they provide and ID verification of the client. I use one for all my transactions, for the betterment of my clients and myself.
What about bank Notaries? Some banks have a Notary at their branch, and some do not. Often, there can be long lines or waits at banks, scheduling is usually required, and most importantly, a bank Notary may not be able to accommodate certain requests, such as witnesses, I-9 Forms, or certified copies, but mobile notaries typically can. In addition, you can have multiple documents notarized in one visit with a mobile notary, whereas banks typically only offer this service for one document at a time. If you have multiple documents and have to keep going back to the bank or mailbox store notary, that is precious time out of your life. How much is your time worth?
